PRAYER

• "A Call to Spiritual Reformation" by D. A. Carson, is a book on prayer. Why study prayer? In Carson's own words, "One of the foundational steps in knowing God, and one of the basic demonstrations that we do know God, is prayer - spiritual, persistent, biblically minded prayer. Writing a century and a half ago, Robert Murray M'Cheyne declared, 'What a man is alone on his knees before God, that he is, and no more.' But we have ignored this truism. We have learned to organize, build institutions, publish books, insert ourselves into the media, develop evangelistic strategies, and administer discipleship programs, but we have forgotten how to pray." This class has the same aim as Carson's book: "to work through several of Paul's prayers in such a way that we hear God speak to us today, and to find strength and direction to improve our praying, both for God's glory and for our good." May God make us a praying people and use our time in a powerful way over these next 13 weeks."

HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE FOR YOURSELF

• This class has gone so well and has proved to be so beneficial that we are offering it again. If you are a new believer, this class will be ideal for you. If you have been a Christian for sometime, we will expose you to approaches to Bible study that you probably have not seen before but will also sharpen your skills and bless you spiritually. Yes, there are weekly assignments, but we keep them as brief as possible. Because this is a “how to” class, they are truly necessary in order to make the class worthwhile. Rather than thinking of them as homework, think of them as opportunities to gain some experience in these worthwhile techniques while you still have the opportunity to discuss them and refine them to meet your own needs. You will find that even these will be a great blessing because they are all from God’s Word. Also due to the nature of the class, we need to limit its size. Therefore we have two ways that you can sign up. One is at the information desk in the foyer and the other is online at EP’s website (www.epcnewark.org). If we have more people sign up than we can accommodate this quarter, we will offer the class again. Therefore if you cannot take the class this quarter but would like to take it in the future, please sign up and note that as well.

MIGHTY TO SAVE

Led by Todd Metzler meets in Balcony Room 202

• Rick Phillips, Council Member of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals and Senior Pastor of Second Presbyterian Church in Greenville, SC, wrote a book entitled Mighty to Save: Discovering God’s Grace in the Miracles of Jesus. In it he looked at 13 miracles that Christ performed as recorded in the Gospel of Luke. Rev. Phillips’ prayer is that “through these studies you will come to a firmer grasp of what Jesus has accomplished for all who look to Him in faith and therefore to a stronger hope in which to live.” The class will be a combination of lecture and interactive discussion, and while it would be beneficial to purchase the book, it is not required.
